Statistics:

Girdwood’s population increased from 1,350 residents in 1993 to 1,850 residents in 2003. The market for residential property is higher than is available. The average price for vacant lots has increased from $102,546 in 2001 to $132,263 in 2004. People are looking for owned or rented residences, secondary homes and vacation rentals. Homes averaging from 750 to 1,500 square feet, cost around $100,000 to $200,000.

Sporting Activities:

The city of Girdwood has a large ski area. There are many activities available, including snowboarding, snowshoeing, guided glacier hikes, wildlife tours, luxury cruises, fishing trips, charters to Prince William Sound, Kenai rafting and fishing trips, flight seeing and glacier landings, rock climbing, paragliding and jet boating. For vacationers who want to relax, there are less arduous activities like gold panning and berry picking.

Highlights:

You can enjoy visiting the the Girdwood Center for the Visual Arts and the Girdwood Market Place. The Wildlife Conservation Center is open to the public to take pictures or just drive around in their own cars. Girdwood is near the entrance to the Kenai Peninsula and Portage Glacier, which you can view at the Visitor Center in Portage Valley on Portage Lake.

Weather:

The average Alaskan temperatures range between the 60s and the 80s. However, temperatures can vary over just a few miles. Girdwood weather is not the same as the weather in Anchorage because Girdwood is on the world’s most northern rainforests, which contains the tree-lined Winner Creek Trail, and is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains. When Anchorage is sunny, the weather can be overcast in Girdwood.

Relocation:
